A projector can allow you to watch your favorite movies or family recordings anywhere. Whether that means at home or outdoors in your backyard or at a camping spot. Something particularly interesting about projectors is their function, as they portray an image with light; this means that different projectors have different brightness levels and this does affect the quality of the movies and shows we watch.

But how does this work exactly? Should you opt for a brighter or darker projector? And what do "Lumens" have to do with all of this? Well, that's precisely what we are discussing today, so keep reading to discover the role lumens and brightness play when it comes to projections.

What do "lumens" mean in projectors?

Lumens are measurement units that represent the brightness value of a given device or item. So when you see a Lumens value listed in reference to projectors it simply is a way to let you know just how bright the projector is. For example, a candle can be considered to have a Lumens value of 14. and a light bulb can reach up to 1600 on its own. So Lumens helps buyers understand how bright a given projector is compared to its peers.

How many lumens is good for a projector?

There's no inherent best value for lumens when it comes to choosing a projector. While a high lumen projector is usually a selling pitch for many people at the end of the day, the ideal lumen value will depend on the location and planned use of your projector. So 2,000 Lumens might be ideal for a home theater setup, but not necessarily for camping.

Something that can cause further confusion is the difference between a Lumens projector and an ANSI Lumens projector, but that simply comes down to minute differences between measuring units. Any source of light can be measured as either SI Lumens or ANSI Lumens, so in theory, all projectors have a value for both systems. However, as a whole, ANSI Lumens are considered to be more exact, so most projectors use the unit, and when we mention Lumens during the article it'll be in reference to the ANSI unit.

Can a high-lumen projector give better viewing quality for projectors?

A projector's lumens value is just one of many factors that play a role in the resulting quality of your projection. Proper brightness is important for the resulting quality of your image, and you should aim to pick a projector that fits your needs. But projectors being brighter does not suddenly make the entire picture better.

The resolution will always be one of the determining factors when it comes to how much quality can a projector offer, similarly, the projecting surface will play a role in the way colors are portrayed, and even ambient lighting can ultimately affect the way your projection looks.

Why do lumens matter in projectors?

While lumens might not be the only factor that determines how a projector works, that doesn't change the fact that the lumens value is still very important, and this can be best seen through a few key points.

Lumens are a representation of how bright a projector is in general, and as such a projector with a low value will always look muted compared to other models. Just like how your TV and PC have a maximum brightness a projector can't go above its stated Lumens value.

why do lumens matter

Watching a dark projection can cause strain on the eyes, making it tiresome to watch an entire movie. Going for a darker projector in an already dark room can ultimately result in an incredibly tiring setup for your eyes.

Brightness plays a role in the way projectors display colors and contrast, so at higher lumen ratings a projector should be able to offer more accurate pictures. This means that movie buffs will generally prefer brighter devices.

A projector will rarely be the sole source of light in a given space, and the surrounding light does affect the way a projection comes across. If a room has more lumens than a projector the image will appear washed out and will be hard to distinguish.

Lumens are directly related to a projector's viewing angle, which is the overall area from which a projection continues to look clear and distinguishable. Going overboard on lumens for the sake of it can reduce the viewing angle, resulting in a subpar experience for viewers outside of a said angle.

How bright should my projector be?

By now we've covered the concept of lumens and its effects on projectors from every angle anybody could come up with, but that does leave one major question unanswered: Just how bright should my projector be?

As we mentioned above, there isn't a single lumen value that is good for every setting. The role a projector is meant to serve and the lighting quality of the room will affect the calculation. However, this also means we can offer a general guideline of what values are good for each setting and use.

Do you plan to use your projector indoors? 2,000 lumens is generally considered to be a good value for general home theater uses on a 16:9 screen. The value will go up if you have too much ambient lighting, but similarly, if you have next to none you can also opt for a lower value. Are you planning to bring your projector on the go to areas with low lightning like a camping trip? 600 Lumens can be more than enough in that case then.

While these are general recommendations that work in broad terms you should keep in mind that the location of your projector, the chosen screen, and even the distance the projector's beam has to cover will play a role when it comes to image quality. So some level of variance will always be present.
